Geneva Airport is more than a welcoming point for travelers to Switzerland. Chances are it will cause you to become absolutely breathless if you like airports.
The location of the airport is unique as it places it on Lake Geneva, and in between the Alps, and the picturesque Jura mountains. The area was actually inhabited way, way back in 3000 B. C.!
It is split into two completely different sectors, the French side, and the Swiss side as it sits on the dividing line for each country.
This works out very well for passengers, as those who come from or to France do not have to go through the sometimes time-wasting Swiss customs and immigration, provided they do not wander from the French side of the airport.
The Geneva Airport centers around a unique concept. It is a believed that business and pleasure should be united together in representing the airport, and you’ll find that they were very successful in fulfilling this concept. The ambiance is gentle, yet modernistic.
Though the Geneva Airport is a busy one, the indoor portion retains a certain dynamic that you’ll take pleasure in as you shop in the attractive contemporary shops that are scattered throughout the airport.
The shops have an international flavor about them that is both charming and attractive. If you need to shop for specifically European goods, you’ll be thrilled and totally delighted with either the shops on the French side, or the Swiss side. Both have an abundance of shopping areas.
Food in the airport is certainly nothing to worry about, as the new total renovation of the restaurants and bars within the airport has just been completed in December 2008. With exceptional views of the surroundings as well as the tarmac, the food court is named Les Jardins de Genève (The gardens of Geneva).
Americans will definitely recognize such locales as Burger King and Starbucks, but will also enjoy, among others, the "Upper Crust” a delicious sandwich bar, “Bento” featuring mouth-watering Asian cuisine, and “Le Sud” (The South) presenting scrumptious Mediterranean cuisine.
There’s even a jazz café for total relaxation and enjoyment of jazz music. A Seafood Bar beckons you to satisfy your desires for Swiss salmon and of course, the ubiquitous caviar, or with sea foods prepared as other international nations prepare them.
