My Favorite Geneva Attractions

There are so many Geneva attractions, that it’s difficult to outline them all, but let's give it a try: these are the ones I consider the very best and most interesting.

Geneva is the United Nations headquarters for the European sector (see picture above), thus you should plan on visiting the exciting, but sprawling, complex. You’ll not wish to miss the place where the famous Geneva Convention was signed!

Many years ago, visiting this place was a must for every Swiss school kid. I still own a picture of myself in shorts near the famous world globe statue in front of those buildings.

If you follow in my footsteps, you will notice that Geneva is one of the most beautiful European cities.

The UN building is one of the major Geneva attractions It sits in splendor on the beautiful Lake Geneva that is a showpiece itself with its amazing Jet D’eau, or water jets, that sprout incredibly high and are perfectly timed.

Around the picturesque lake, you’ll find The Promenades, which house irresistible cafes, sumptuous restaurants, street markets and even kiosks that sell tickets to partake in water skiing, amusement rides and even romantic lake cruises.

You have probably heard of yet another Geneva attraction located there: the splendid saunas and public bathing areas. This is where you’ll find a reason to send a postcard back home, for you can relish in a Swiss tradition – a relaxing and health-providing massage.

Don’t miss The Flower Clock, which is comprised entirely of flowers and should definitely be seen, oh and don’t forget your camera!

If inclined cobblestone streets filled with historic landmarks, quaint boutiques and intimate cafes attract you, then the ancient Old Town will definitely be your ultimate pleasure!

Square in front of Cathedral St Pierre in Geneva's old town Be sure and view the Bourg-de-Four which is the oldest municipal square in Geneva, as well as the seat of Geneva’s government; the 15th century Hotel de Ville. Undoubtedly the ancient ramparts will echo history for you, as they do to the populace of Geneva.

Americans are often awed by how far back history goes back to in Europe.... If that goes for you, Geneva will not disappoint you!

For instance, completed in 1866, the Russian Church found nearby with its gilded cupolas, and striking gold spires, it is an unexpected sight among so many French buildings. The construction and architecture of the church are amazing. So much gold!

Another Geneva attraction is Place Neuve which means “new place.” The theatrical performances there will amaze you and you’ll delight in the after theater restaurants and cafes. This is dining at the peak of available Swiss cuisine.

If you’ve brought your children with you, or you are an adult who never grew up, you’ll thrill with your visit to the Schtrumpfs Building!

It is named for the “Smurfs” of TV fame though the Smurfs are not Swiss but of Belgian descent. However, it features some of the most funky architectural creations you’ve ever seen. The colors and the styles encountered in the building are reminiscent of Gaudi architecture.

Most sights are included in one of the city tours that will help you discover even more.

You did remember to bring your camera, right?

As for other Geneva attractions, all you’ll be able to say after your visit there is “So much to see in Geneva, and so little time!” Enjoy!
