It is the second most populated city in Switzerland and is recognized as a truly international city due to the many international organizations that are present there such as the Red Cross, WHO and WTC. It is also known as it is where the Geneva Conventions were signed in 1864, 1906, 1929 and finally in 1949. The region has magnificent mountain landscapes and a spectacular countryside with chalets, villas and ski apartments. There are also numerous places to stay in Geneva for every budget. The lake and the river Rhone divide the city into two parts. The north bank is more modern, the south bank is filled with streets that are mostly for shopping and banking. Another beautiful place to see is the spectacular one-of-a-kind fountain Jet d’Eau. It shoots water to 460 feet into the air and is truly an unbelievable sight. Originally designed as the main source of water in 1891 and now a masterpiece to behold. The island of La Tour-de-l’Ile is a very beautiful place to visit. In days gone by this was used as the military base and all strategies were planned there. There is an amazing collection of forms of architecture on this island. All this makes this city a beautiful place to be in. To top it all there is the L’Escalade celebration. This is one of the oldest celebrations and attended by everyone. It is a patriotic celebration to commemorate the city’s independence from the Savoyards on the 12th of december 1602. The best part about this festival is the torchlight procession that takes place all over town in various costumes.
