Visiting The Lausanne Cathedral – A Time Well Spent

The Lausanne Cathedral is one of the most remarkable structures in the Lake Geneva district in Switzerland. In fact, the Romans began this inspirational building establishing construction of it with Roman materials.
The present church building was erected in 1215, until another construction expert by the name of Jean Cotereel added a porch, a tower, and a belfry.
The church was consecrated in 1275. It underwent additional construction in the 18th century and once more in the 19th century.
As formidable as the outside of the Cathedral is, the interior will cause you to walk about with your mouth open as you crane your neck in order to gaze at everything. Flying buttresses support the choir creating one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in Europe.
You will genuinely understand why the church is under constant restoration in an effort to show the cathedral in its former glory. The walls are multi-colored and considered one of the better examples of religious structures. There are awesome paintings, and statues to admire and some are considered unique in Europe.
The glass panes of the giant Gothic rose window are considered masterpieces. They illustrate the medieval countenance of the world assembled around the form of God, the worshiped creator of said world.
Frescoes, a certain painting category done on the plaster of church walls or ceilings, of biblical personages, bishops and saints are everywhere, and many of them were created in the 16th century. Startlingly you'll earn that some were done on wet plaster, and some on dry plaster, creating a unexpected depth to the painting.
The Lausanne Cathedral boasts a new organ, which was inaugurated in 2003. Designed by an Italian and manufactured by Americans, it took over 150,000 hours to complete, and boasts 7,000 pipes.
Should luck be on your side when you visit it, you'll be able to hear an actual concert. The astonishing sound will without a doubt remain with you for the rest of your life.
Tip: wear good shoes when walking around the cathedral and especially in the old city. It is sometimes steep and most streets are cobblestoned.
Should you be fortunate enough to spend the night in Lausanne, you'll be flabbergasted to hear that there are night watchmen at the Cathedral and their calls heard every hour will bring you back to the days when watchmen were incredibly important to prevent churches from being pillaged or set on fire.
