Colorful houses in the old town of Lausanne Switzerland

Are you interested in paying a visit to Lausanne, Switzerland? There are so many things to see here that there’s no room to mention them all here – instead, I’ll give you some of the highlights which absolutely must not be missed.

The Cathedrale Notre-Dame is the first sight on our brief itinerary here. You’ll have to climb the Escaliers du Marché to reach it, a set of 160 covered stairs dating to the medieval era; this is a tourist attraction in its own right.

The Notre Dame was consecrated in 1725 and is one of the best known structures in the entire Lake Geneva district of Switzerland.

Lake Geneva, Lausanne The best way to get around Lausanne is on foot. Within a short walk of the main rail station there are many sights to see. There are many (mostly) car-free streets in this area.

The streets here are a little steeper than you may be used to; however, there is also the alternative of taking the Metro M2, which will take you to Place ST. Francois in the city’s Old Town.

The Old Town in Lausanne, Switzerland is considerably larger than that of most Swiss cities. It would take days to explore all that its cobbled streets have to offer.

Chateau Saint-Maire

Saint Maire castle in Lausanne On the north side of the city stands the Chateau St.-Maire, which was once the home of the bishops of Lausanne, who chose the spot for its site on a hill, well away from the lower city.

The castle is still the seat of regional power – although now this power is not the clergy, but the Government of the Canton of Vaud.

Fondation de l'Hermitage

The Hermitage was built in 1841 for the banker Charles-Juste Bugnion. This structure sits apart for them rest of the city on a hill overlooking the Old Town and offers incredible views of the Cathedral. The Bugnion family donated the home to the city and it is now a museum which hosts traveling art exhibits.

Chateau d’Ouchy The Chateau d’Ouchy is yet another medieval castle in the city which must not be missed. This castle, complete with its original donjon is located at the shores of Lake Geneva.

The castle has found new life as a 50 room hotel, offering beautiful views and historic ambience combined with world-class comfort.

Nearby the Chateau d'Ouchy you'l find the Olympic Museum, a must if you are into sports.

The location is not randomly chosen. Lausanne, Switzerland is the residence of the International Olympic Committee and the museum houses a wide range of sports exhibitions for young and old.
