Montreux, Switzerland is known all over the world for the famous Montreux Jazz Festival, which is held every year for two weeks beginning on the first Friday in July. The festival has hosted performances over the years by hundreds of performers, including Miles Davis and Anthony Braxton.
Extending far beyond jazz, the festival also features rock, blues, reggae and soul artists. The city really comes alive for the festival, with a holiday atmosphere palpable all over the city, especially on the promenade, where numerous free concerts are held.
Montreux has been a world capital of music for more than a century now. Igor Stravinsky and his family lived in the nearby town of Clarens for many years, favoring the climate of the Swiss Riviera for health reasons. Montreux Switzerland.
The Stravinsky Auditorium in Montreux (picture above) was erected in his honor and is one of the venues used for the annual Montreux Jazz Festival.The Miles Davis Hall (photo at the right) is another of the venues for the event, named of course for the jazz luminary Miles Davis. Freddie Mercury, the late singer of the rock band Queen also lived here until his death in 1991.Montreux’s lakeside features a park with statues of some of these famous people, bringing home the metropolitan nature of the city. History buffs will be fascinated by the Museum of Montreux, located in the old town. This museum features exhibits covering the history of the area from the Roman era to the late 1800’s. The oldest house in Montreux, Visinand House (picture left) is home to the city’s cultural center, which features rotating exhibitions of both modern and traditional art.
