Nyon has a rich history and a lively present, with many festivals and events. The city was founded by the Romans on the shore of Lake Geneva between 50 and 44 BCE. Today's name is taken from the old Roman name for the city center, Noviodunum or Noiodunum. The surrounding area was known as Civitas Equestrium. It became one of the most important colonies for Rome. It had its own forum, an amphitheater and a basilica. The amphitheater was recently uncovered in 1996.
