Vevey Switzerland, Top Tips for Enjoying
The ideal way to experience what the town of Vevey Switzerland, has to offer is to wander its streets. You’ll see the narrow alleyways of its Old Town, which surround the enormous Grand-Place with a network of arcades and beautiful shuttered facades. You’ll be able to take part in the lively commercial and social life of the town, mingling with the locals as you see the sights. The Grand-Place features a granary dating to 1803 (known as La Grenette), which was built in the Neo-Classical rustic style. This structure now is home to Vevey’s tourist office.

At the shores of the lake, you’ll see Aile Castle (picture at the right), a neo-gothic treasure which is one of the most remarkable structures in this remarkable little town. You’ll also see the medieval era St. Jean’s Tower (top of page) as you stroll along Vevey’s streets. The 18th century landmark St. Martin’s Church stands on a terrace overlooking the railway. This is a great place to visit and offers breathtaking views of the town and surrounding areas. Vevey Switzerland, runs smoothly together with the neighboring town to the easy, La Tour de Peilz; a charming port village.
As you make your way to La Tour de Peilz, you’ll see a statue erected in honor of Charlie Chaplin – Chaplin is represented twirling his cane and in his familiar bowler hat.This statue stands along the rosebushes on the Quai Perdonnet near Place du Marche. Chaplin was a resident of the area; he lived in the nearby town of Corsier from 1950 until his death in 1977. The actor and director is buried in the town cemetery. Victor Hugo, Jean-Jacques Rosseau and Graham Greene have all resided in the Corsier-Vevey area, as well as the region’s most famous resident, Henri Nestle, founder of the Nestle company. In fact, the company is headquartered here, their offices are located lakeside.
The Nestle company headquarters is also closely affiliated with the neighboring Alimentarium, a food and nutrition museum that is nice for kids (picture left). The Musee Historique (historical museum) is nearby, where there is a permanent exhibit dedicated to Vevey’s Fete des Vignerons (wine growers festival) which is held every 25 years, with the last event having happened in 1999.
