Vevey - Quiet and Charming, but with a Lot to Offer

 Vevey is located on the northern end of Lake Geneva, between the cities of Lausanne and Montreux. It is smaller than Lausanne and some of the other surrounding communities, but it should not be overlooked. Cruising on the lake is a pleasant pastime when visiting this quiet and charming resort town. Any romantic soul will enjoy a walk along the shore here. Exploration of the Old Town district of Vevey is another way you can pleasantly pass your day, shopping and tasting chocolates and other goodies. You can also take the Wine Train and visit some of the local vineyards. There is a service called Les Pleiades that takes visitors up into the mountain meadows to enjoy the wildflowers, short hikes and the views of the valley. Vevey is a stop on the train route from Lausanne to Montreux. It has a trolley bus service that will take you up into the mountains to view the valley and to eat at some fine dining restaurants. The town contains a large central square with a view of Lake Geneva and an Old Town district full of unique shops and boutiques. Be sure to try the local chocolate!
On a summer evening, you can take a walk down the promenade and take your photo with the statue of Charlie Chaplin, perhaps the most famous resident of this quaint little town. There's a Chaplin museum in Corsier-sur-Vevey.
Other famous residents of this little gem in the past include the writer, Victor Hugo, writer Jean-Jacques Rousseau, actor James Mason and American financier, J.P. Morgan.
It is also the location of the Nestlé Corporation's headquarters, which was founded in this little town by Henri Nestlé in 1867. The company's brands are globally renowned. They produce milk, bottled water, pet food, chocolate, confectionery, ice cream, coffee and a whole lot more. No wonder, Nestlé is one of the most important factors for the local economy.
Vevey hosts a biweekly market, with an expanded version all summer long known as Marche Folklorique. The market is located right on the lake in the Grand Place square and contains many farmers, grocers, butchers and locals who sell fresh fruits, vegetables and jellies.
From the town center you can start many excursions. For example, you could take the funicular railway to Mont Pèlerin, set between the lake, the vineyards and woods. This is the most pleasant way to access the “balconies” of Chardonne and the Mont Pèlerin.
Rail fans will also appreciate the line Blonay-Chamby with historical convoys drawn by antique steam engines or ancient electric railcars. They cover a distance of three kilometres between the railway stations of Blonay and Chamby.
The town also hosts Images, a festival that sets the standard of cutting-edge cinema and contemporary photography. The Street Theatre Festival takes place in August every year, offering free entertainment for three days.
The Fêtes des Vignerons are a wine fest that honor the winegrowers of the region. It is only held once every 25 years, and when it happens it is an event not to be missed, with 6000 actors performing on the shore of Lake Geneva. Next time will be 2024.
